Leadership starts at home: your family of origin and how you function at work
Your family of origin is your first context. It forms the blueprint for a number of important life issues. It is where you learn to take others into account, to know your place, to deal with power and hierarchy, to grasp the significance of rewards and punishment, to deal with punishment, tension and conflict, to get recognition, do things together, experience various forms of loyalty … That blueprint stays with you in your work context, and profoundly influences how you function at work.
Why do you invariably end up working for an authoritarian boss/colleague? To what extent did you pick a particular a degree programme to meet your parents’ (unvoiced) expectations? Can’t understand why, time and again, you fail to get that long expected promotion or hoped-for success?
Invisible loyalty towards your family of origin may well be a stumbling block. Integrating your contextual mental legacy into your job makes you more aware of underlying processes and increases your effectiveness.
This talk highlights how your family of origin influences the way in which you function in your professional life. Once you’ve identified specific patterns you will be able to face recurrent situations head-on. You also learn how to tap into those themes to help you approach colleagues and co-workers.
The Power of Language
The way you express yourself reveals who you are: choice of words, intonation, pace, sentence structure,… The way you express yourself reflects inner images, convictions and principles. This mainly impacts on you, but also on others and your environment. The way you express yourself is a powerful instrument, both in a positive and negative sense. Every time you use a certain word, you summon up specific images or experiences. Associations are made, often subconsciously. But it goes further than that. Every time you utter, think or hear a specific word, existing (inner) underlying images are brought to the surface.

The main goal of this talk is to make you more aware of how you speak. Once that has been achieved you can decide which images you want to conjure up. Awareness of how you express yourself is a strong, safe and cheap instrument for change. Even tiny changes in how you express yourself can bring about significant transformations. The result is: increased impact, better collaboration, more confidence and happier relationships. The approach is highly pragmatic and packed with practical tips and tricks.
Art as a Tool for Self-Knowledge
‘Beauty will save the world’, Prince Myskin says in Dostoyevski’s The Idiot. ‘Save’ may be a slight exaggeration - or is it? Research has shown that patients in hospitals that have paintings on the walls need less pain medication and make a quicker recovery. Stories and myths have inspired artists to create art (painting, music, poetry, …). We explore the meaning of art, starting from the creation narrative in Genesis. We look at how it has inspired artists and how the latter articulate their creativity. The beauty of various art forms moves us. But what exactly is it that moves us in art? Where does its beauty lie? Its pull? How can we learn to look at art differently?

After this talk you will never look at art and your inner beauty in the same way again.
